SALES OF AUTUMN HOME ESSENTIALS SOAR, DESPITE THE HEATWAVE, ACCORDING TO MARKETPLACE EXPERTS
Brits are showing that they’re not going to be lulled into a false sense of security by soaring temperatures, with leading retail experts reporting an increase in sales across key cosy categories since the beginning of August.
UK-based marketplace, OnBuy, has seen consumers leaning into the change in seasons, with a steady increase in non-seasonal sales, including Halloween decorations (+283%), electric fires (+75%), candles (+42%) and, most astonishingly, winter duvets, up 266%!
John Upton, Head of Product Performance at OnBuy, said: “When the weather in August was so poor, we weren’t surprised to see people getting into the autumn mindset, but we haven’t seen sales slow down since the heatwave began. It looks like Britain has written off summer 2023.
“Last year, we saw a smaller increase in similar categories during the same period, but it appears that consumers have learned from the events of winter 2022 and are really gearing up for the colder months.
“‘Code Orange’, the growing TikTok trend, has also had a pronounced impact, as Halloween decorations are up 283% vs. 85% in the same period last year!”
Experts believe several factors are driving consumers to prepare for winter early. The increase in the cost-of-living, combined with the memory of last year’s astronomical fuel bills, has caused savvy shoppers to start planning ahead to take advantage of the best deals on the market, as households work to make their budgets stretch as far as possible.
John added: “Consumers are definitely looking for the best deals. Since we launched our Cashback scheme in July, OnBuy customers get instant Cashback on everything they buy on the site, and its clearly having an impact on the way people shop. It’s a great way to earn money on the items you’re planning to buy anyway and could really help families take the sting out of the cost of Christmas if they make the most of it ahead of time.“
OnBuy Cashback was launched in July 2023, and offers shoppers rates between 1-10% on everything they buy, with the best rates being awarded to existing customers.
The marketplace launched the initiative as a no-nonsense approach to customer rewards, shunning the traditional points-driven loyalty schemes in favour of tangible benefits that don’t involve any cost to the consumer.
Cashback can be spent instantly on OnBuy, saved up indefinitely, or withdrawn 30-days from the last delivery date, providing a customer has a balance of £5 or more. Customers are also able to take advantage of a broad range of payment options, including Clearpay and Klarna.
