'FIVE WAYS TO HELP YOUR BUDGET GO FURTHER THIS CHRISTMAS’
We all pledge that we’re going to start our Christmas shopping earlier, but if ever there was a time to become the organized person you’ve always wanted to be, it’s now. It’s not just about spreading the cost or snapping up bargains in the moment (although these are both great reasons to get cracking). The retail experts over at the UK-based marketplace OnBuy.com have shared a few secrets of online shopping, which could help you make some serious savings.
1. Retailers often sell in more places than one!
50% of adults are shopping around more in 2023 and retailers know it. To give themselves the best chance of reaching a wider audience, brands often sell across marketplaces as well as on their own websites. The price they sell at should be consistent across every shopping destination, which means that any additional offers applied by the retailer or one of the platforms they’re selling through are an added bonus, so it’s worth doing your research, especially around key seasonal promotional periods like Black Friday weekend.
2. Reap your rewards
If you’re part of a loyalty scheme, make sure you rack up as many benefits as possible over the next few weeks to offset some of those bigger costs later down the line. Have a supermarket loyalty card? Resist the urge to spend your points and use them to offset the cost of your Christmas food shop.
Keep an eye out on cashback and discount sites for additional offers and stay up to date with new loyalty initiatives that are being released. OnBuy for example, recently introduced cashback on absolutely everything you buy, without the usual hassle of using a third-party site. You can spend it straight away on your next order, save it up so you have a nice chunk when you want to treat yourself, or withdraw it to your bank account and stick it in a card if you’re stuck for a gift idea*.
3. Know when new ranges are released
Not too bothered by having the latest model? If the answer is ‘no’ you can make some big savings. When this year’s new phone releases drop for example, the price of previous models drop considerably. The same applies across most tech, home, garden and fashion categories. New ranges often drop around the end of September and again in late February in preparation for the new season ahead, so mark it in your calendar and be that vulture!
4. Sign up for everything!
Most sites will offer discounts on your next order for joining their mailing lists, they’ll also send through additional offers that can come in pretty handy, especially around pay days or on the run up to events like Christmas. Some can be extremely lucrative if you’re smart with how you use them. OnBuy awards its highest Cashback rates, which range anywhere between 3 and 5 percent to existing customers via email. The average Brit spent £430 on presents last year, that could mean at least £20 back in your pocket from the things you would have bought anyway!
5. Know when a deal is really a deal
It’s easy to get caught up in the frenzy around events like Black Friday and Prime Day and while some offers are great, others aren’t always as good as look. If you’re planning to use a well-known discount event to save a bit of cash this season, make a list of the items you’re hoping to snap up in advance and compare some prices ahead of time, so you’ll know just how good the savings are. If you see something at a great price in the meantime, strike while the iron is hot and save yourself the stress.

*Cashback can be withdrawn 30 days from the last delivery date as long as you have a balance of £5 or more.
