Following America’s lead, Halloween has gained massive popularity in the UK in recent years. But while Brits typically used to wait until the first week of October before buying their tricks and treats, industry experts have recently reported an interesting change in behaviour.
UK-based marketplace, OnBuy, has seen consumers gear up for spooky season earlier than ever before this year, with Halloween decorations up a whopping 70% in July-September 2023 compared to the previous year. That’s despite the country-wide heatwave at the start of September, where a lull in autumnal product sales was predicted across the retail sector.
Since 2013, UK consumer spending on Halloween items has more than doubled, with figures sat at a comfortable estimate of over £600 million in 2021.
And with popular TikTok trends like ‘Code Orange’ and ‘Boo Boxes’ increasingly becoming part of peoples’ social media feeds, it’s no surprise that Halloween product sales are spiking well ahead of the day itself.
John Upton, Head of Product Performance at OnBuy, said: Interestingly, many of the products that have performed particularly well so far this year are designed to be used outside. Window projectors, life-size skeletons and outdoor lights have all seen a significant uplift in sales, suggesting that people are jumping on the American trend of decorating their gardens, as well as the inside of their homes.
“They’re also typically mid-range items, priced between £20-£30, which indicates that shoppers are preparing earlier to help to spread the cost of the holiday season.”
